Spark 2.8.2 Released

Posted by wroot Champion Nov 25, 2016

The Ignite Realtime community has just released Spark 2.8.2 and it can be downloaded from Ignite Realtime: Downloads .

This is a regular update. But there is a change, which can affect new users. "Accept all certificates" option on the Adanced menu on the Login screen won't be enabled by default for new users from now on. This option makes Spark automatically accept expired, self-signed and other incorrect TLS certificates. Which makes it less secure. If you are using self-signed certificates, your new users will have to enable this option manually (once). Or you can add this option to a preconfigured spark.properties file, if you distribute it to new users. Old users won't be affected by this (those upgrading straight from 2.7 version will still be affected). We encourage server admins to use certificates from trusted authorities (e.g. Let's Encrypt). This version also includes 4.1.9 update for Smack, which has a fix for a critical security vulnerability.

UPDATE (2016/11/29): it looks like Spark is not saving settings on Advanced menu, if a user has never opened it. For such users "Accept all certificates" setting will be disabled after updating to 2.8.2 from any version. They will have to go to Advanced menu and enable it, if they encounter "Unable to verify a certificate" error.

Those who are using Client Control plugin will have to update it to version 2.1.0 as Spark 2.8.2 is already modified to work with that version and it will miss many menus and checkboxes if being used with an older version of that plugin. 2.1.0 version requires Openfire 4.0.0 at least. If you are using older version of Openfire and want to keep using Client Control, you might want to hold of updating to Spark 2.8.2.

We also would like to mention SparkMeet plugin provided by our long time contributor Dele Olajide. Hopefully we will find a way to bundle this plugin with Spark or provide other options to use it. You can also vote here and tell what you think about it. Initial commit is done and its in Spark's source code sparkmeet plugin - initial release by deleolajide · Pull Request #253 · igniterealtime/Spark · GitHub.

For a complete list of changes please check Spark Changelog

As usually we encourage new developers to join Spark project and provide patches. Those familiar with Smack can join the development easier, as we are now using the latest stable version (4.1.9). Patches can be attached in the forums or submitted as PRs on GitHub.

Here are the contributors to this release (besides myself):

freeseawind · GitHub  contributed new skin for Spark - LittleLuck

Alexander198961 (Aleksander Kovtunenko) · GitHub  fixed the issue with Spark freezing on exit because of a faulty plugin

Michael  added more settings to default.properties and Client Control plugin, fixed showing of an empty Unfiled group and a few other issues

Martini26  updated Polish translation

speedy  fixed an issue with systray icon switching to regular one when it should be DND or Away and a few issues with invisible mode

nicoben (Nico Ben) · GitHub  updated Italian translation

Spark 2.8.1 Released

Posted by wroot Champion Oct 1, 2016

The Ignite Realtime community has just released Spark 2.8.1 and it can be downloaded from Ignite Realtime: Downloads .

This is a bugfix release for 2.8.0, which has introduced a huge overhaul and created a few new issues. Many users had problems with login after upgrading to 2.8.0. This won't change with 2.8.1. It is not a bug, but rather an incorrect setup. Admittedly, this was introduced because of lack of security check in older Spark\Smack versions. But we can't leave Spark blind to bad or forged certificates (in the age of security breaches and moving all the web to TLS). So, if you have this problems, please read Login issues since Spark 2.8.0 . 2.8.1 is introducing an option "Disable certificate hostname verification (not recommended)" in the Advanced settings of the Login screen. If you can't fix your setup or want a temporary workaround, you can use it. But be warned, that you will make yourself (or your users) less secure. 2.8.0 also introduced new setting "Accept all certificates" in the same place. It was enabled by default for those upgrading from 2.7.7. It automatically accepts self-signed and some other incorrect certificates (expired, etc.). This was done to make 2.8.0 backwards compatible, if you were using self-signed certificates provided by Openfire. This setting will stay enabled after 2.8.1 update. But there is a plan to make it disabled by default for new installations in 2.8.2 version.

For a complete list of changes please check Spark Changelog

As usually we encourage new developers to join Spark project and provide patches. Those familiar with Smack can join the development easier, as we are now using the latest version. Patches can be attached in the forums or submitted as PRs on GitHub.

Here are the contributors to this release (besides myself):

nicoben (Nico Ben) · GitHub  updated Italian translation

speedy  added option to login with not matching certificate's hostname, fixed showing incorrect errors when logging in and empty profile fields issue

Alexander198961 (Aleksander Kovtunenko) · GitHub  fixed links opening in KDE environment

Guus der Kinderen  fixed various parts of Spark to behave correctly or log errors

Spark 2.8.0 Released

Posted by wroot Champion Aug 25, 2016

The Ignite Realtime community has just released Spark 2.8.0 and it can be downloaded from Ignite Realtime: Downloads.

This is a major release marking the end of support for Java 7 (which has reached the end of life state more than a year ago). Full Spark installers have already been bundled with Java 8 for some time. Online installer won't work with Java 7 starting with 2.8.0 version. We recommend updating to Java 8. Underlying Smack library has been updated to the latest version in this release. Roar plugin has received new popup control options as well.

There is a huge list of changes in this version. So this most probably has introduced new issues (though we have tried to catch and fix most of them before the release). Please report in the forums, if you find them. Again, please do not post bug reports in the comments of this blog post.

For a complete list of changes please check Spark Changelog

As usually we encourage new developers to join Spark project and provide patches. Those familiar with Smack can join the development easier, as we are now on the current version of it (4.1.8 at the moment of this release). Patches can be attached in the forums or submitted as PRs on GitHub.

Here are the contributors to this release (besides myself):

Wolf  updated Roar plugin to have separate settings for group chat and keyword matching popups, added system style popups

Alexander198961 · GitHub  added option to save room's password, added URL support to admin's broadcast dialog

Леонід  added Ukrainian translation

nicoben (Nico Ben) · GitHub  updated Italian translation

speedy  fixed failed login process with self-signed certificates, updated Substance skin library, fixed an issue with idle on Windows 10 lock screen

Daryl Herzmann  fixed Debian build

We owe Guus der Kinderen  a separate mention. Guus has done a huge job of updating Spark to the current Smack version, which contains a lot of bug fixes, security patches and new features. He has also fixed many other issues along the way. Such as group chat window size issues, room occupants presence management, annoying word wrapping issue with long text lines, SSO/GSSAPI problems, etc.

Important information for SSO (Single Sign On) users, if they are using SRV records: SSO (Single Sign On) configuration changes since Spark 2.8.0

UPDATE: Important information for those having login issues with 2.8.0: Login issues since Spark 2.8.0

[SIP phone] SIP plugin is not working since the Smack 4 update. We hope to have it fixed for 2.8.1.

[Voice Chat] Jingle (PC to PC) calls are not working at this point.

[Linux] Flashing plugin is not working on Linux systems.

The Ignite Realtime community has just released Spark 2.7.7 and it can be downloaded from Ignite Realtime: Downloads .

This is another minor release marking exactly one year since Spark project reboot (yeah, we also like to have Anniversary Update ). There are a few small fixes and updates in this release (as a regression with Idle presence, fix for OTR plugin, etc.). I want to use this chance to look back at the last year. Spark had 7 more releases since the 2.7.0 during that time. 100 tickets have been resolved. Some old patches have been applied (laying around in the forums and the tracker for years). We have also received new patches from around 10 new contributors. Which is great! We see that Spark project is often forked on GitHub, so we hope more developers will forward their patches and new features to the main project. There is also an official Wikipedia page for Spark now (and additional 6 languages linked to it) in hope to increase awareness of this project.

Spark 2.7.6 Released

Posted by wroot Champion Mar 15, 2016

The Ignite Realtime community has just released Spark 2.7.6 and it can be downloaded from Ignite Realtime: Downloads.

In this release more patches went into fixing Mac OS X version (issues with Preferences, File transfer, etc.). Thanks to speedy for working on this. Also as part of fixing issues on Mac we have applied an experimental version of Libjitsi patch by cstux (Voice Chat module). We haven't been able to test, if it works better (or at all). So waiting for a feedback on this in Updated Voice Chat module testing. Thanks to Alexander198961 · GitHub for his patches fixing broadcast and other issues. Waiting for more from him.

For a complete list of changes please check Spark Changelog

Spark 2.7.5 Released

Posted by wroot Champion Jan 14, 2016

The Ignite Realtime community has just released Spark 2.7.5 and it can be downloaded from Ignite Realtime: Downloads.

This is a hotfix release to fix the issue with only first offline message showing upon login when using Openfire 4.0.0 as a server (or any other server which has dropped support for deprecated XEP-0091). Thanks a lot to CSH  for providing a quick fix for this issue.

At the same time speedy  was tackling the long standing issue with an installer for Mac OS X. So we are adding that into this release. Please report issues with the installer at New Spark installer for Mac OS X needs testing (LOCKED). There is also a link in that thread to the list of issues in Spark when using on Mac OS X. You can test and report which issues are still present. The installer is not bundled with JRE yet, so you need to install Oracle's latest Java on your system.

Also thanks goes to another translator - swiftech · GitHub . This time for Chinese Simplified. And, of course, we thank Daryl Herzmann  for his continuous support fixing the builds and providing installers for the release.

We also wanted to bring another major update for this release. Updating Smack library to 3.4.0 (from 3.3.1). But it brakes Fastpath plugin in Spark as Fastpath's part has been moved to smackx-workgroup.jar in that version. Waiting for a patch to fix that, so we can move on to even newer versions of Smack.

For a complete list of changes please check official Spark Changelog

Spark 2.7.4 Released

Posted by wroot Champion Dec 18, 2015

The Ignite Realtime community has just released Spark 2.7.4 and it can be downloaded from Ignite Realtime: Downloads.

This update is a lot about updating translations (Russian, Chinese (Traditional), Lithuanian, etc.) and making some hardcoded parts of GUI available for translation. Also an old patch for proxy connection has been applied in this version, but it looks like Spark is ignoring proxy settings and connects directly instead. Needs more live testing (please report in the forums).

For a complete list of changes please check the official Spark Changelog

We are glad to receive patches from contributors on igniterealtime/Spark · GitHub. 6 of them included in this release. Spark 2.7.2 Released

Posted by wroot Champion Aug 31, 2015

The Ignite Realtime community has released Spark 2.7.2 for general availability and it can be downloaded from Ignite Realtime: Downloads (Note: there are no working Mac OS X installer as our current build environment has no working setup for Mac, also Spark has lots of issues on the current Mac OS versions and the community has no active Mac OS developers willing to step in).

It's another small update containing a few fixes and minor new features.

This is the complete list of changes in this version (official changelog):

https://igniterealtime.org/issues/browse/SPARK-1615 - Update bundled JRE with the latest version (this time built-in Java has been bumped to the latest official Java 8 version (1.8.0_60). Also for the first time Spark has been built using Java 8. Java 7 is finally dropped in all areas of Spark. Hopefully switching to Java 8 will improve performance and stability).

https://igniterealtime.org/issues/browse/SPARK-1458 - Spark prepends the default status text to a custom one

https://igniterealtime.org/issues/browse/SPARK-1614 - Add an option to show seconds in a message time stamp

https://igniterealtime.org/issues/browse/SPARK-1619 - Add an option to use Spark version as a resource (some administrators will appreciate this, as they would be able to see what version of Spark their users are using by looking at the Sessions page in Openfire's Admin Console).

https://igniterealtime.org/issues/browse/SPARK-1622 - Add options to default.properties to use hostname or version as resource (a way to enforce usage of these options)

https://igniterealtime.org/issues/browse/SPARK-1621 - Add a caption "0 = infinite" to the duration option of Roar popups

There is still no Project Lead developer for Spark (no active developers at all actually). So there won't be a regular schedule of releases. But you can always share your patches on the GitHub. If you find new issues, you can report them in the forums and we will at least file them in the bug tracker for the future developers to tackle.

This is a minor thing. But i wanted to share with the community, that after a few days of back and forth with reviewers i've managed to get my article about Spark submitted (with some remarks) to Wikipedia. Openfire had its page for a few years already (i'm not the original author, but i update it occasionally). So i thought it is not fare for Spark not to be represented as well Also, i have found a few articles in other languages, which were either outdated or very short (linked them to this article), so i thought Spark needed a better source of information.

Feel free to improve the article (Openfire's also), update linked articles in your language or add more languages. Spread the word

Spark 2.7.1 Released

Posted by wroot Champion Jun 12, 2015

The Ignite Realtime community has released Spark 2.7.1 for general availability and it can be downloaded from Ignite Realtime: Downloads (Note: there are no working Mac OS X installer as our current build environment has no working setup for Mac, also Spark has lots of issues on the current Mac OS versions and the community has no active Mac OS developers willing to step in).

This release contains much less changes comparing to the previous version (12 tickets with a minor changes and fixes). The plan is to do minor releases with a few changes, so it would be easier to find a culprit if regression happens. But there won't be a new version every other day. We don't want system admins to get mad at us

This is the complete list of changes in this version (official changelog):

SPARK-864 - Printing conversation margin cuts off characters from lines that wrap

SPARK-1512 - ***<user> is online at message does not always show in chat room

SPARK-1513 - After receiving XML data as a message Spark stops displaying history

SPARK-1604 - Buzz and stale settings overlap in the Preferences window

SPARK-1588 - Update French translation

SPARK-1607 - Show JID as contact name if instead an empty string would have been shown

SPARK-1609 - Default resource should be "Spark" without a version number

SPARK-1611 - Update Lithuanian translation

SPARK-1617 - Fix loading of Spellchecker's IgnoreUppercase setting

SPARK-979 - Add an option to disable graying out and italic for idle contacts

SPARK-1503 - Option to use hostname as a resource

SPARK-1584 - Update bundled JRE with the latest version

This release is bundled with the latest and last Java 7 update (7u80). Next releases will be bundled with Java 8 (most probably). Printing GUI has been replaced with the modern Java based version.

There is still no Project Lead developer for Spark (no active developers at all actually). So there won't be a regular schedule of releases. But you can always share your patches on the GitHub. If you find new issues, you can report them in the forums and we will at least file them in the bug tracker for the future developers to tackle.

Spark 2.7.0 Released

Posted by wroot Champion Apr 24, 2015

The Ignite Realtime community has released Spark 2.7.0 for general availability and it can be downloaded from Ignite Realtime: Downloads (Note: there are no working Mac OS X installer as our current build environment has no working setup for Mac, also Spark has lots of issues on the current Mac OS versions and the community has no active Mac OS developers willing to step in).

This release is a mandatory one to use with the recently released Openfire 3.10.0. As 2.6.3 version has issues connecting to the new server version. Though there is a not recommended workaround to revert to using Old SSL setting, which is less secure than TLS. The community strongly advises to upgrade to 2.7.0 version. Even if you are not planning to update to 3.10.0 release of Openfire yet. Spark hasn't seen a release in almost 3 years, but it was constantly evolving. Many fixes and improvements have been applied to the code since the last release. Some users have it deployed in the production environment for years and find it more stable than 2.6.3 version (as myself with 200+ user base).

We are sad that currently Spark has no Project Lead and there are no active contributors to this project. So, fixes and new features may not come up quickly. We hope open source community will embrace and improve this project in the future. You can start sharing your patches on the GitHub. If you find new issues, you can report them in the forums and we will at least file them in the bug tracker for the future developers to tackle.

Here's a list of some important fixes/changes:

[SPARK-1074] Sending part doesnt get a notification about the transfer cancellation - Jive Software Open Source

[SPARK-1362] No confirmation on the sender's part that the file transfer completed  - Jive Software Open Source

[SPARK-1397] Fix the displaying of system tray icons - Jive Software Open Source  (minor one, but not for such a picky person as i am, Spark icon now looks much nicer)

[SPARK-1414] Chat window is not flashing when receiving new message on Windows 7 64 bit - Jive Software Open Source

[SPARK-1525] Update smack - Jive Software Open Source  (huge update for Spark and this is probably the cause why 2.6.3 can't connect to newer Openfire as it uses older Smack library)

[SPARK-1524] Spark is not reconnecting automatically after connection loss - Jive Software Open Source

[SPARK-1546] Spark visually shows that a message is not sent - Jive Software Open Source  (one of the most annoying bugs in 2.6.3)

Also the Conversation history dialog has been completely reworked and should load faster and should be easier to navigate. Java has been updated to the recent 1.7.0 version, which should fix issues with some timezones. There are also numerous memory leak fixes. You can find the full changelog here: Spark Changelog

There are also some open issues. Like the still broken voice chat module. One of the past Spark maintainers cstux has started a work on fixing this, but it is moving slowly. File transfers may not work between 2.6.3 and 2.7.0 versions because of many changes to this functionality in 2.7.0. This is a somewhat frightening list of open issues (though many are minor) Spark - Jive Software Open Source So, again, we encourage Java developers to move this project forward.

Smack  3.2.0 Beta has been released on February 3, 2011.  It has been well  over 2 years since the last release, but much work has been done to fix bugs and add new features.  There are still other issues to be worked on, as there will always be, but it is time to start a new roadmap for Smack.

The  starting point will be this release with the intent to produce a more  regular release cycle.  I will try to outline a roadmap for future  releases in the near future based on the current set of issues, feedback  within the forums and of course developer contributions.

You can download from the Beta Releases downloads page.

Spark 2.6.0 RC1 has been released on November 17, 2010. It was a long period of silence since the last Beta 2 release and even longer since the latest Final release. But the work was continued, one project leader changed the other. There were a lot of changes in the code, both seen in the UI (color changes, additional options and buttons) and under the hood (lots of proprietary code replaced with open source analogs). Some new features were introduced, bugs fixed, and of course some new bugs introduced As i said, the work is constantly continued by 3-6 volunteer contributors. The plan is to release RC2 in December and then the Final release next year in January. Meanwhile we ask the community to try out RC1 and report about the issues in the forums.

There is no official changelog still, so i will just give a link to a list of 2.6.0 bugs in the tracker, 90% of them are fixed already.

Downloads for different platforms can be found on Beta Releases downloads page

Important note before upgrading! In 2.6.0 RC1 user's profile path has been changed to ..Username\Application Data\Spark (Windows XP), ..Username\AppData\Roaming\Spark (Vista/Win7) or $HOME/.Spark (Linux). If you want to use same preferences and have old history, copy user's profile folder to a new location and Spark will pick it up. Old location was just the ..Username\Spark. There is no automatic import option in the installer so far and it is not known if there will be one. So keep this in mind.
