The Ignite Realtime Community is proud to announce the 4.1.5 release of Openfire.  This release signifies our continuing effort to produce stable 4.1 series releases while work continues on the next major release.  A changelog denoting 18 resolved issues is available and you can download the release builds from our website.  There was one change that we decided not to ship with this release.  Work was done to produce 64bit windows installers, but complications exist when you attempt to upgrade previously installed 32bit versions.  We hope to iron out those issues prior to releasing 4.1.6 or even 4.2.0, depending on which comes first If testing this functionality interests you, please stop by our chatroom and let us know!

Important to know: Openfire now automatically installs the service. On the last step of the installer you will have an option whether to start it or not (it will also open the browser pointing to Admin Console, if you chose to start it). You shouldn't run the launcher, if the service is started. Documentation is updated accordingly. If you already have older service running, stop it before upgrading.

The Ignite Realtime Community is pleased to announce the 4.0.3 release of Openfire.  Openfire is a cross-platform real-time collaboration server based on the XMPP (Jabber) protocol.  This release signifies our ongoing effort to produce a stable 4.0 series release while continuing to work toward a 4.1 release. A changelog of fixes is available and indicates 14 issues resolved.

Note: There was an unfortunate and complicated problem with the distributed 4.0.2 .deb Openfire installer.  If you had troubles with it and reverted to 4.0.1, we hope that you try 4.0.3 now.  See OF-1116 for some more details.  Also, if you are an experienced Debian/Ubuntu packager, we would certainly love your feedback on how the .deb package for Openfire is generated and distributed.

Additionally, this update contains an updated truststore. This truststore is used by Openfire to secure remote connections.  If you are using an installer and have manually updated this file in the past, it is likely that the installer will not overwrite your changes with the new truststore.  Please review your resources/security directory after install and rectify differences you may find.

The Ignite Realtime Community is pleased to announce a release candidate build of the upcoming 3.10.0 release.  A lot of work has gone into this RC since the beta release a few months back and with your help testing, we are hoping to turn around a full 3.10.0 release very soon!  Here are some of the highlights since the beta:

  • OF-885 : Use non-blocking, async IO for BOSH connections
  • OF-893: Fix mutual authentication for BOSH
  • OF-869: Update Jetty to version 9.2
  • OF-877: BOSH connector does not properly restart after configuration change

For those of you that track our progress on Github, we are starting a new approach for development going forward.  An Openfire 3.10 branch has been created and the hope is that we will not have feature creep in this branch, but instead focus on stability and be able to make point releases when the situation warrants.  In the past, Openfire's point releases (ie 3.9.0 to 3.9.1) was a mixture of bug fixes and new features.  The new features will appear in other branches with an eye toward a future 3.11 or 4.0 release!  We are always looking for more folks to help develop Openfire, so please send us those pull requests and stop by our XMPP MUC room open_chat@conference.igniterealtime.org to say hi.

So please test this RC and report issues you find in the Openfire Support ForumDo not report issues by commenting on this blog post please!

Here is a listing of download links and md5sums for this release.  You can find these also on our beta download page.

Happy testing!

The Ignite Realtime Community is pleased to announce the 1.0.0 release of the REST API plugin for Openfire.  This plugin is being developed by community member Redeyes. This plugin merges and replaces the functionality found in the "MUC Service Plugin" and the REST functionality found in the "User Service Plugin".  This new plugin allows for REST style administration of Openfire.

The current feature list, taken from the README file includes:

  • Get overview over all or specific user and to create, update or delete a user
  • Get overview over all user roster entries and to add, update or delete a roster entry
  • Add user to a group and remove a user from a group
  • Lockout or unlock the user (enable / disable)
  • Get overview over all or specific system properties and to create, update or delete system property
  • Get overview over all or specific chat room and to create, update or delete a chat room

Please report any issues or feature ideas for this plugin in the Community Forums.

Greetings all.  Baring any significant community protest, the subversion server for Igniterealtime will be shutdown on 1 January 2015.  All of the active and still relevant repositories have been migrated (with commit histories hopefully in-tact) to our Github presence.

The following Ignite subversion repositories were not migrated due to them likely no longer being relevant

  • kraken
  • transports
  • wildfire

Some of the migrated repositories to Github have not seen development in a number of years.  We are certainly interested to hear of any community members that may wish to revitalize any of these projects:

When the subversion service is shutdown, a copy of the repos will be maintained offline in case anything comes up in the future necessitating its revival.   Github has been an awesome platform to collaborate on for our active projects that migrated a number of months ago.  Hopefully this change helps breathe some life into the older Igniterealtime projects!

The Ignite Realtime Community is pleased to announce that Openfire version 3.9.3 is available for download!

Openfire is a real time collaboration (RTC) server licensed under the Open Source Apache license. It uses the only widely adopted open protocol for instant messaging, XMPP (also called Jabber). Openfire is incredibly easy to setup and administer, but offers rock-solid security and performance.

This release corrects the regressions found with the 3.9.2 release, which include:

  • [OF-782] - Wrong URL generated for editing groups with space in the names
  • [OF-783] - Apply encryption to secure properties during setup (updating openfire backended by LDAP would fail)
  • [OF-787] - TLS server to server connections are not working with 3.9.2
  • [OF-791] - Joining new MUC room results in a 404 error
  • The initial 3.9.2 release had a packaging problem with the windows installer.

A full changelog can be found here.

We'd invite interested developers to fork our github repository and contribute pull requests with your fixes.  Ongoing discussions are happening in the community forums about the future of Openfire development.  Please join in if you are interested!

[ OF-745] - Use TLS-dialback even if that mechanism is not advertised

[ OF-757] - Allow s2s message of subdomain of XMPP domain when no components are found

[ OF-569] - Add deluser adhoc command

[ OF-764] - Group chat history (MUC) should match configuration after server restart

[ OF-771] - MUC service should flush recent history before shutting down

[ OF-125] - Restrict discovery of rooms based on users membership

[ OF-297] - fix: mutual roster deletion problem

[ OF-770] - CVE-2014-2741 Uncontrolled Resource Consumption with XMPP-Layer Compression

[ OF-722] - Openfire should save XEP-0184 delivery receipts as offline message

[ OF-758] - Add support for XEP-0280 "Message Carbons"

This is the first release of Openfire after our migration of code development to Github.  We'd encourage interested developers to fork Openfire and send pull requests!  It is best for you to create a dedicated branch on your fork to submit the eventual pull request from. Please note that we are not syncing the github repository to the previous openfire subversion repository hosted on igniterealtime.

As always, we welcome your feedback, suggestions, tips, hints, questions and other contributions in the Igniterealtime Community Forums. Please do not respond to this blog post with questions.

Yesterday's release of Openfire 3.9.0 had some problems with packaging of the release.  Bouncycastle signed jar files were getting packed, which then caused problems when Openfire attempted to load them.  We have hopefully fixed this issue and cleaned up a few other details and are proud to announce a 3.9.1 release!
