Clearspace 2.5

Some notes about Clearspace 2.5:

1. Is there a way to enable that old editor? I don't like WYSIWYG editors on web pages, because they are not working in most cases. An other point is that WYSIWYG is much slower to use. Some examples which don't work here:

  • How to insert source code? {code}-Tag does not longer work, and I don't find any button for that. 50% of my posts in this community do contain source code...
  • If I copy&paste text, e.g. from a online dictionary, it does create a link of it or does other stupid things like changing the font size.

2. Why we see now real names instead of the usernames? There are more oddities in the user profile, eg. in my profile I have fields like 500.5000.1, 500.5001.1 or 500.5011.1. What is this?

3. In the past it was possible to show only the recent content of some special sub-communities on the start page. Is it still possible to show only recent content of "Openfire Support", "Openfire Dev" and "Community Plugins" ?

Coolcat i suppose? I havent tried new clearspace version a lot. I see much power in Personalizing. But what i hate the most is the SLOWENESS. I hope this is temporary.. And i dont want this wisiwyg either. In PM messages editor is not doing word wrapping.

Hrm.  Watch a user widget requires a username?  That's a good point, if we're going to have full names in a lot of places, we should have a user searcher thing for that.  I'll report that back to the team.  I'm also going to ask around if there's a way to force user of nicknames.  At the moment it's totally up to the user as to what gets used.  In the case of this community, I'd rather see nicknames, and I think everyone would.  I'll see what I can find out, thanks!

Rich text editor is here to stay.  Having to dance between the plain text editor and the rich text editor is what caused so many problems with the rich text editor before.  (they were using conflicting methods of wanting to store the raw data and such and had to be hacked to cooperate ... if you could call it that)  The new editor is quite good actually.  I never thought I would like a rich text editor but this one actually converted me.  I "missed" the macros for a time but got over it.

That's ok if that editor won't stay on my way to communicate with people. I switched to text editor in previous versions because of a few issues in rich text editor (i remember i wasnt able to go to new line after quoting some text).

And i want my Firefox spellchecker back. This one is not working at all for me.

I remember once after clearspace upgrade showing of Names was turned on, then Dawn has changed this to usernames. So maybe this can be done in that version too. This community is old enough and is world spread, so it's often easier to remember nicknames, than names. I have guessed Coolcat only by familiar usericon.

Btw, People view is now bloated (at least in default view). There are not many users putting their pictures in profiles. So now it shows a lot of blank space.

wroot, I agree about the spell checker and am reporting this back.

I'm reporting the people view "bloating", but I honestly don't expect that to be changed.  I -can- as the template handler make that vanish.  However I'm thinking about leaning towards encouraging folk to upload pictures.  Not sure about that yet.

I'm also researching if there's a way to -force- usernames instead of full names.  Right now it's totally up to the settings of the end users.

wroot, regarding the speed, the bulk of that is due to initial "having to cache stuff".  It should calm down and be quite speedy.  In fact right now everything is running faster than it did under 1.10 for me.  Let me know if it keeps being slow.

    Re: Clearspace 2.5

    1.  The WYSIWYG has a double >> next to the emoticon button that allows you to insert various types of code.

    2. If you see real names then the person your self include filled in their profile with their real name after the upgrade and chose show below the last name field.  If you choose hide your username shows instead.

    3. You ca no longer do this :-( .  Truly a downside to this new system.

It is possible to show the recent content of certain subcommunities.  What it -can't- do is combine that into one widget.  If you had three, you'd have to have three recent content widgets.  Anyway, click on the edit button (in the upper right hand corner) of a widget to change it's configuration.

I mean, that i got email notification about your last message here and it has a link

                    http://www.igniterealtime.org/community/message/175799#175799

When i press it, it brings me to the first page instead of that message. URL seems to be fine. Maybe this is some add-on messing up (can only suspect Tab Mix Plus, will try with it disabled), but everything was fine with old clearspace.

wroot: I thought you meant when you hit submit after doing a reply that you get sent to the first page.  So this is clicking a link from an email notification?  Crud, unfortunately I'm still not able to reproduce that (just clicked on this one for example)  Out of curiousity, next time to see that, try clicking the link a second time.  I'm seeing some odd behaviors here and there that seem to "only happen once".

we had that before.  What is missing is the ability to use the markup for things like [code] in line while typing.  This was way easier than having to mouse around.  I do not know about others but when I type I do not want to have to stop to click buttons to get the text the way I want if I know the markup.  Wrining in html would be a PIA.  Some of the changes area step backward.  Custom views now have widgets but we lost the ability to choose specific communities to show.  The WSYIWYG has some new features and supports more browsers be we lost known markup codes.

        1. Which HTML elements are getting modified? We have to strip a few out for security but perhaps you're running into a bug. I checked out the thread you linked to but am not totally clear about the bad behavior you're running into.

        2. Preview on HTML is a good idea -- we'll consider that.

        3. We just turned on Javascript combining in Clearspace which should speed page loads and content editing.

You cannot re-sort people searches.  For example search for win, then try to sort by username, it will fail to do the re-sort.

It's really a must have to be able to set one widget for multiple areas. I dont want 8 of them for every community i watch. Same with tag watch.

You probably want 'recent activity' rather than recent content.

I agree about the usefulness for one widget to watch multiple spaces or tags. My new setup is three recent activity widgets on the left (xiff, sparkweb, sparkweb support), and status updates and a tag watch for 'bug' on the right.

    * RTE jums to second line then i click for the first time in the reply window.

    * About sloweness. It seems that i face this when i launch it for a first time. E.g. i have just entered the clearspace for a first time today and it was very long (transferring, waiting cycle in Firefox statusbar), now it seems to be quicker. Maybe this happens after clearspace upgrades? Maybe Firefox starts to cache again. Though this shouldnt take so long even with cache turned off. Anyway, this was ok with older clearspace and the same browser/PC, and all other sites are loading as usually.

As for the slowness, yeah, this editor is "way more involved" than the other one.  So it takes more to download.  That said, there's a ninja way we can make it speed up by combining together the javascript files into one but we had to turn it off briefly because it was causing an unexpected issue.  Still, it helped a -lot- with load time.

    Re: Clearspace 2.5

Pressing the link to message in email notification is acting different but still weird. Now i'm thrown to the middle of the thread, but not to the message in the link.

And after reply i'm thrown in that place too, not to the message i have posted. So it's not working again. It looks like 4 page, but page number is not bolded.

And you probably already know that Watch a tag widget has a bug. It shows "Content tagged with tag?html" instead
of.. aargh.. i'm just tired to fight with that RTE.. it's HORRIBLE! cursor jumps around as it want, i cant change style of text (doesnt remove bolding in that case).. and it loads forever.. sick

      Re: Clearspace 2.5

Hey guys, first off, thanks a ton for the screenshots and source!  Passing that back to the devs.

As for the RTE, I know what you mean about it jumping around and such.  Flash back a couple of weeks ago, I could not have possibly been more pleased with the RTE.  In the process of fixing other issues I think it's gotten a little flaky here and there.  Now, a number of things have been updated with it recently and I just updated Clearspace to the latest a moment ago, so please let me know if the RTE is still causing you pain.  I'll make sure to keep on the devs about making sure it runs smooth.  I know it's possible for this to be wonderful --- like I said, couple of weeks ago it was glorious!  I think it's just suffering from some mid-bug fixing waffling.  =)

Thanks as always for y'alls help reporting bugs!  Y'alls help has been invaluable!

(ps i didn't know about the watch a tag issue, reporting it too!)

I can't really do anything with that info.  Can you describe the circumstances around when the RTE dropped half of your post?

Can you describe what it "looked like" when it erased half your stuff?  like were you looking at it and you started typing something and then clicked italic and half of it went away?  Something along those lines?

It was dropped after I clicked on "Post Message", I noticed it frist when I saw my posting in the thread...

If somethings went's wrong while editing, you can simply press Ctrl+Z (Undo).

What the ...  after you clicked post?!  I've never seen/heard that before!  Has it happened more than once?

wroot, good ideas, lemme relay those.

Yeah. I'm still figuring out how to make my View more comfortable. I want to get a lot of info, but i want it to be compact. What i like in Recent Activity is that i get comments on Docks, Blogs and Polls in there. But i dont like to see all 10 replies to one post on the same page. Then Recent Content is more suitable, as it shows only updated content. So it will show only the last reply of the particular thread. Also it shows the location of the thread (i dont usually read Dev forums, and i cant choose what forums to watch now), and it shows author icons (if i choose layout with wiser column for that widget) and the age of that update. So now i'm switching to Recent Content. But maybe i would leave Recent Activity on my View if i could customize what to show in that widget.

                      Re: Clearspace 2.5

First off folk, Clearspace was updated over the weekend, a lot of things that were reported have been fixed.  That said ...

                      An completly other thing:

Got this screenshot when clicking on "reply" on this thread. I cann't reproduce it, but is does happen really often, say in one of twenty cases when clicking on "reply" somewhere. When using the "go back"-feature of my browser and clicking again on "reply" it does work again.

I think I'm seeing this, except it shows up as a system error for me.  For me it only happens once per day, and is related to a jsessionid that gets set in the urls.  It appears to be something tomcat is "helping with".  =/  It's definitely on the list of things being worked on right now.

    Re: Clearspace 2.5

I see that in recent activity comments on Blogs and Documents are shown on the list. Why not showing Polls comments? Also in this widget there could be an option to select which activities i want to see (created, replied, status updates, comments, blogs, docs, etc.)

    Re: Clearspace 2.5

Btw, it seems that only this thread acts weird when i press the link in email notification. "Spark features" thread's notification just took me right to the last comment, though it hasnt bolded the last page number.

Hm, as i have posted about comments in polls not showing up, they have started to show up in my recent activity
