Clearspace 2.5

Some notes about Clearspace 2.5:
1. Is there a way to enable that old editor? I don't like WYSIWYG editors on web pages, because they are not working in most cases. An other point is that WYSIWYG is much slower to use. Some examples which don't work here:
2. Why we see now real names instead of the usernames? There are more oddities in the user profile, eg. in my profile I have fields like 500.5000.1, 500.5001.1 or 500.5011.1. What is this?
3. In the past it was possible to show only the recent content of some special sub-communities on the start page. Is it still possible to show only recent content of "Openfire Support", "Openfire Dev" and "Community Plugins" ?
Coolcat i suppose?
I havent tried new clearspace version a lot. I see much power in Personalizing. But what i hate the most is the SLOWENESS. I hope this is temporary.. And i dont want this wisiwyg either. In PM messages editor is not doing word wrapping.
Coolcat i suppose?
yes. ![]()
2. Why we see now real names instead of the usernames?
If I want to use the "Watch a User"-Widget I have to specify a username. Yeah....cool...but how to find out the username, since I only see the real name. Seams to be an really ingenious interface...
(ok, there is a way: open the users profile and take a look on your address bar, but....my goodness!)
Hrm. Watch a user widget requires a username? That's a good point, if we're going to have full names in a lot of places, we should have a user searcher thing for that. I'll report that back to the team. I'm also going to ask around if there's a way to force user of nicknames. At the moment it's totally up to the user as to what gets used. In the case of this community, I'd rather see nicknames, and I think everyone would. I'll see what I can find out, thanks!
Rich text editor is here to stay. Having to dance between the plain text editor and the rich text editor is what caused so many problems with the rich text editor before. (they were using conflicting methods of wanting to store the raw data and such and had to be hacked to cooperate ... if you could call it that) The new editor is quite good actually. I never thought I would like a rich text editor but this one actually converted me. I "missed" the macros for a time but got over it.
jadestorm wrote:

That's ok if that editor won't stay on my way to communicate with people. I switched to text editor in previous versions because of a few issues in rich text editor (i remember i wasnt able to go to new line after quoting some text).
And i want my Firefox spellchecker back. This one is not working at all for me.
I remember once after clearspace upgrade showing of Names was turned on, then Dawn has changed this to usernames. So maybe this can be done in that version too. This community is old enough and is world spread, so it's often easier to remember nicknames, than names. I have guessed Coolcat only by familiar usericon.
Btw, People view is now bloated (at least in default view). There are not many users putting their pictures in profiles. So now it shows a lot of blank space.
wroot, I agree about the spell checker and am reporting this back.
I'm reporting the people view "bloating", but I honestly don't expect that to be changed. I -can- as the template handler make that vanish. However I'm thinking about leaning towards encouraging folk to upload pictures. Not sure about that yet.
I'm also researching if there's a way to -force- usernames instead of full names. Right now it's totally up to the settings of the end users.
wroot, regarding the speed, the bulk of that is due to initial "having to cache stuff". It should calm down and be quite speedy. In fact right now everything is running faster than it did under 1.10 for me. Let me know if it keeps being slow.
1. The WYSIWYG has a double >> next to the emoticon button that allows you to insert various types of code.
2. If you see real names then the person your self include filled in their profile with their real name after the upgrade and chose show below the last name field. If you choose hide your username shows instead.
3. You ca no longer do this :-( . Truly a downside to this new system.
1. ah...ok....but typing {code} is still much faster than choosing "SyntaxHighlighting -> Java" from that menu. However, you call this "SyntaxHighlighting" ?
public class Test {
public static void main(String[] args) {
System.out.println("Hello World.");
}
}
3. ![]()
4. I ran into a bug:
Coolcat wrote:
4. I ran into a bug:
- Logout
- Go to your own Profile
- Download your own vCard (small icon next to your name on profile page)
- Login again => page does redirect to vCard download instead of login
- press refresh button of your browser
- you are now logged in correctly
Ooh. Great catch. Reporting back. Thanks!
I don't see any 500.5011.1 looking things in your profile, where are you seeing that? Would you mind attaching a screen shot?
It is possible to show the recent content of certain subcommunities. What it -can't- do is combine that into one widget. If you had three, you'd have to have three recent content widgets. Anyway, click on the edit button (in the upper right hand corner) of a widget to change it's configuration.
Would you mind attaching a screen shot?
Looks as there would be some strings not available.
5. Is it possible to disable the build-in spellchecker and get back my browsers spellchecker? (I'm using Firefox)
Coolcat wrote:

I'm quite with you there... I don't know what's actually preventing the browser spell checker from doing it's job. I'll ask around!
after i reply in a discussion, page refreshes to a first message in the thread.
wroot, what browser are you using? Every time I reply it takes me to the very end of the list.
I cant quote Daniel's messages in that editor..
Firefox 3.0.1
The same with email notifications, though addressbar shows correct url of the message the link is still taking me to a first page of the thread.
I can't quote either. Apparently that bug "popped up out of nowhere" and is known and is being fixed. Weird! =/
I'm not sure what you mean by "the same with email notifications", and I still can't seem to reproduce a reply taking you back to the first page. I'm also on Firefox 3.0.1. Anyone else seeing this?
I mean, that i got email notification about your last message here and it has a link
http://www.igniterealtime.org/community/message/175799#175799
When i press it, it brings me to the first page instead of that message. URL seems to be fine. Maybe this is some add-on messing up (can only suspect Tab Mix Plus, will try with it disabled), but everything was fine with old clearspace.
wroot: I thought you meant when you hit submit after doing a reply that you get sent to the first page. So this is clicking a link from an email notification? Crud, unfortunately I'm still not able to reproduce that (just clicked on this one for example) Out of curiousity, next time to see that, try clicking the link a second time. I'm seeing some odd behaviors here and there that seem to "only happen once".
Daniel, it happens both with clicking on the link and after submitting a message.
I still can't seem to reproduce a reply taking you back to the first page. I'm also on Firefox 3.0.1. Anyone else seeing this?
I have a possbile related problem:
By clicking on this thread in "recent content" (its a link to a specific post, e.g this) I come to an page with the correct content (it shows the correct post), but the index of the different pages of this thread is wrong. Normally the third page should be bold and, because its the last page at the moment, there should be no "next page" link.
Edit: After replying this post, I was redirected to this page, which does not contain this post.
Edit2: There seems to be a problem which posts are shown on which subpage. The partition seems to change all the time.

6. I noticed that I didn't not get any email notifications today, even though having this enabled for this for all threads I create or answer to.
Maybe my mail server does detect it as spam? I have whitelisted the following email adresses:
Does clearspace send from any other address?
The watch email from your post came from webmaster@jivesoftware.com
Coolcat: Also, notifications from watches are not working at the moment as far as I can tell. Replies are working fine, but not "I am watching this community" type stuff.
Coolcat: (...) What browser are you using?
Firefox 3.0.1
Maybe this has again something to do with the locale?
but not "I am watching this community" type stuff.
Ok, I'm not using that.
The watch email from your post came from webmaster (at) jivesoftware (dot) com
I have added that email address to my whitelist now. Could someone please simply reply to this thread. Also please send me some private message, so I can see it's working now? Thanks. ![]()

Coolcat: Hrm. That doesn't sound good, but I also can't seem to reproduce it either. What browser are you using?

Whoa what the crap? What language setting do you have? Looking at the exact same page, except from my perspective, I'm seeing the proper fields! Todd? Anyone else? What happens if you look at yours?
Whoa what the crap? What language setting do you have?
I see this in all profiles, not only my own. Locale in preferences is set to "German (Germany)". When setting to "English (United States)" everything looks right.

Excellent catch! Reporting back!
Let me know if it keeps being slow.
When pressing "Reply" here in this thread it takes 5-6 seconds until I get the editor, if the page is already cached and I have already done some other "Replies". When clearing the browsers cache before pressing on "Reply" it takes actually 22 seconds until I can start to write.
What about the "SyntaxHighlighting"? (I mentioned it above)
6. I noticed that I didn't not get any email notifications today, even though having this enabled for this for all threads I create or answer to.
The reply window in safari has no style sheet but the new discussion is ok.
Todd, regarding the reply style sheet, did you try a shift reload to see if an old style sheet was cached? I can't reproduce it. Is it only on discussions or something else?
It is working now. I had not been before. I tried from both windows and macs running safari. The style sheet did not load. The windows machine was a fresh install of safari.
I did get all the ~20 replies in that thread ![]()
One option you have is to click the HTML button i the RTE -- that will let you you power users enter HTML directly vs. using the RTE. ![]()
we had that before. What is missing is the ability to use the markup for things like [code] in line while typing. This was way easier than having to mouse around. I do not know about others but when I type I do not want to have to stop to click buttons to get the text the way I want if I know the markup. Wrining in html would be a PIA. Some of the changes area step backward. Custom views now have widgets but we lost the ability to choose specific communities to show. The WSYIWYG has some new features and supports more browsers be we lost known markup codes.
Thanks, but HTML input is not that helpful, especially because the code is modified somehow. If I paste some source code inside a <pre>...</pre> enviroment (see my post here) it does insert multiple for some reason. Also I'm missing a preview function.
1. Which HTML elements are getting modified? We have to strip a few out for security but perhaps you're running into a bug. I checked out the thread you linked to but am not totally clear about the bad behavior you're running into.
2. Preview on HTML is a good idea -- we'll consider that.
3. We just turned on Javascript combining in Clearspace which should speed page loads and content editing.
@Matt Tucker:

Sorry, there seems to be a bug in the rich text editor, which removes a "& n b s p ;" (without "" and without spaces) For some reason the HTML editor does place some "& n b s p ;" inside my source code. Just see the liked code. Thats just a <pre>-Tag and copy&paste of some Java source code.
Howdy Coolcat, I'm reporting that nbsp issue back to the developers. Also I may not respond to every single post here but I -am- writing everything down and passing it on. I apologize if I don't response indivdually to everything. =)
You cannot re-sort people searches. For example search for win, then try to sort by username, it will fail to do the re-sort.
I like the way of customizing my View. But it lucks some points.
It's really a must have to be able to set one widget for multiple areas. I dont want 8 of them for every community i watch. Same with tag watch.
How can i make Recent Content watch to show the last replied person as i t was in previous version?
You probably want 'recent activity' rather than recent content.
I agree about the usefulness for one widget to watch multiple spaces or tags. My new setup is three recent activity widgets on the left (xiff, sparkweb, sparkweb support), and status updates and a tag watch for 'bug' on the right.
David, yeah, Recent activity is better, though i feel i still miss something. Maybe there was messages count in discussion or something like that. Oh, there were usericons near every new content/activity.
testing with Tab Mix disabled (same problem)
Coolcat, i have PMed you.\
* just happened, i hit Enter and then wanted to delete previous lines, but backspace didnt bring me to the previous line. I thin same things were happening to me with previous rich text editor.
Btw, Coolcat has disabled his name showing in Community, but i still get notifications with his Name. This is really bad. I wonder what others get then i reply?
Coolcat, i have PMed you.
Thanks, its working

Confirmed, wroots real name is displayed in the from-field of the email.
Btw, my profile is filled with 500.5000.1 and similar strings instead of fields names.
test
suddenly it started working fine, now i'm thrown to the last message after submitting reply
Btw, my profile is filled with 500.5000.1 and similar strings instead of fields names.
I had the same problem, reported somewhere in this thread. Switch to locale "Engish (United States)" and that strange numbers will disapear.
Regarding replies suddenly working, I'll ask around as to what changed that might have made that suddenly start working.
wroot, Coolcat, can you two forward me a copy of email that has y'all's real name in it?
@Daniel Henninger: Done.
Thanks Coolcat! (and wroot) For some reason I couldn't email you (Coolcat) back a response. =/ Got rejected by the mail servers.
For some reason I couldn't email you (Coolcat) back a response. =/ Got rejected by the mail servers.
Probably jivesoftware.com is on my email providers spam blacklist.
More bugs:
1. Some times I try to mark text in the RTE (e.g. if I want to convert the marked text in a quote, source code, etc.) the marking does simply disappear. I can not exactly reproduce it, but it does happen often. Sometimes it does make a difference if I mark from left to right or from right to left.
THAT'S the reason why I don't like this rich text editors. Wiki-markup is much easier and faster to use, also easier to implement!
2. There is no warning when JavaScript is disabled for this site. Since this site does not function without JavaScript, there should be a warning.
3. Is it possible to disable this "zoom" feature for attached images? It's just bucking, because a browser is simply to slow to zoom images of such size. You can do a lot of cool things with JavaScript, but not everything....
Message was edited by: Coolcat
I just set a flag that should force usernames in email. (the original problem was reported though)
I've noted your other comments Coolcat.
4. Got a system error (see screenshot) when clicking on the link in a notification email. The link was:
http://www.igniterealtime.org/community/message/175933#175933
I could reproduce it until I answered on that thread.
5. Internal spellchecker of the RTE does not know the word "screenshot". (Also it does not know the word "spellchecker")
Edit: Browser is again Firefox 3.0.1 / Fedora 9 Linux.
The system error sounds rather bizarre. Not sure how to reproduce that one.
As for the dictionary, I can add words to it. hehehe
Spellchecker seems to be generally regarded as not proper (should be spell checker), but I'm surprised screenshot wasn't in the technical dictionary. (i enabled that)
I added screenshot for ya. =)
I have just watched a demo of a some nice feature. Try typing in search field (on main screen) and wait a little. It will show a preview.
* RTE jums to second line then i click for the first time in the reply window.
* About sloweness. It seems that i face this when i launch it for a first time. E.g. i have just entered the clearspace for a first time today and it was very long (transferring, waiting cycle in Firefox statusbar), now it seems to be quicker. Maybe this happens after clearspace upgrades? Maybe Firefox starts to cache again. Though this shouldnt take so long even with cache turned off. Anyway, this was ok with older clearspace and the same browser/PC, and all other sites are loading as usually.
I don't know what's up with that line jump. I'm seeing it too. Reporting it.
As for the slowness, yeah, this editor is "way more involved" than the other one. So it takes more to download. That said, there's a ninja way we can make it speed up by combining together the javascript files into one but we had to turn it off briefly because it was causing an unexpected issue. Still, it helped a -lot- with load time.
I took a look into the editors source code.....the page does include more than 100 JavaScript files! Not counted other files like style scripts, images, etc!! wtf?!!?! With normal browser settings a browser does only load up to 4 files at once per domain!
Also this 100 files do use usual code formating and comments. You can do MUCH speed up when removing all comments and unnecessary whitespaces. You can save approx. 40% of files size with that! Also you could automatically rename variables and method names. Who needs a name like "getSelectionRangeText", when it could be something like "a6fb". With that you can save again some 20-30%. The code does not need to be human readable in a production enviroment. There are some scripts out there which do that, you just need to apply them before deploying the website.
By 10 seconds googling, I found an simple online compressor: http://www.creativyst.com/Prod/3/
I tried with your utils.js, it can save 3283 from 7704 bytes, only in this single file. And you will notice, this compressor does not rename any names. You could save more here...
Coolcat, will pass those tips onto the dev team. I know there was some work being done on compressing those. I'm not entirely sure where that went.
wroot, passing your note about the notification reply. I'm seeing my own odd behaviors that might be related.
Coolcat, turns out we -do- do that compression, it's just turned off at the moment due to a bug. =)
Anyone who is experiencing the "weird pagination" (page not bolded, etc, starts on wrong part of thread on reply, etc) .... if you can, please get a screenshot of what you are seeing and/or a copy of the html source (view -> source). Thanks!

got this, when clicking on the following link in an reply mail:
http://www.igniterealtime.org/community/message/176299#176299
(was the reply mail for wroots post above)
Pressing the link to message in email notification is acting different but still weird. Now i'm thrown to the middle of the thread, but not to the message in the link.
And after reply i'm thrown in that place too, not to the message i have posted. So it's not working again. It looks like 4 page, but page number is not bolded.
And you probably already know that Watch a tag widget has a bug. It shows "Content tagged with tag?html" instead
of.. aargh.. i'm just tired to fight with that RTE.. it's HORRIBLE! cursor jumps around as it want, i cant change style of text (doesnt remove bolding in that case).. and it loads forever.. sick
aargh.. i'm just tired to fight with that RTE.. it's HORRIBLE! cursor jumps around as it want, i cant change style of text (doesnt remove bolding in that case).. and it loads forever.. sick
FullACK!
You said the problem is that RTE generates HTML-code? Why not let the RTE let generate Wiki-markup? So everyone could use RTE or the normal editor. From that Wiki-markup you could easily generate HTML-Code.
We used to have the RTE convert to wiki syntax, but that whole system created tons of problems. In order to fully fix them, we'd basically have to re-create HTML in wiki syntax. I posted a few more details about it in a blog:
http://www.jivesoftware.com/clearstep/people/matt/blog/2008/05/21/a-new-rich-tex t-editor
Hey guys, first off, thanks a ton for the screenshots and source! Passing that back to the devs.
As for the RTE, I know what you mean about it jumping around and such. Flash back a couple of weeks ago, I could not have possibly been more pleased with the RTE. In the process of fixing other issues I think it's gotten a little flaky here and there. Now, a number of things have been updated with it recently and I just updated Clearspace to the latest a moment ago, so please let me know if the RTE is still causing you pain. I'll make sure to keep on the devs about making sure it runs smooth. I know it's possible for this to be wonderful --- like I said, couple of weeks ago it was glorious! I think it's just suffering from some mid-bug fixing waffling. =)
Thanks as always for y'alls help reporting bugs! Y'alls help has been invaluable!
(ps i didn't know about the watch a tag issue, reporting it too!)
WHAAHA!! This stupid RTE has dropped half of my post....![]()
....I wrote 10minutes on that....don't want to restore that now...
http://www.igniterealtime.org/community/message/176678#176678
I can't really do anything with that info. Can you describe the circumstances around when the RTE dropped half of your post?
I can't really do anything with that info.
I know that
. Just wanted to vent my anger somewhere....![]()
Browser: Firefox 3.0.1 / Linux
I can't exaclty reproce it, so it is very unlikely that you will find this. However, I had two quote blocks, each with a bit text below it. The first quote block and the text below was dropped. Inside the dropped text I used some italic font for filenames.
Can you describe what it "looked like" when it erased half your stuff? like were you looking at it and you started typing something and then clicked italic and half of it went away? Something along those lines?
It was dropped after I clicked on "Post Message", I noticed it frist when I saw my posting in the thread...
If somethings went's wrong while editing, you can simply press Ctrl+Z (Undo).

What the ... after you clicked post?! I've never seen/heard that before! Has it happened more than once?
wroot, good ideas, lemme relay those.
jadestorm wrote:

Yeah. I'm still figuring out how to make my View more comfortable. I want to get a lot of info, but i want it to be compact. What i like in Recent Activity is that i get comments on Docks, Blogs and Polls in there. But i dont like to see all 10 replies to one post on the same page. Then Recent Content is more suitable, as it shows only updated content. So it will show only the last reply of the particular thread. Also it shows the location of the thread (i dont usually read Dev forums, and i cant choose what forums to watch now), and it shows author icons (if i choose layout with wiser column for that widget) and the age of that update. So now i'm switching to Recent Content. But maybe i would leave Recent Activity on my View if i could customize what to show in that widget.
What the ... after you clicked post?!
correct.
Has it happened more than once?
It does happen sometimes that some that the RTE produces something different after clicking on "post", but not that worse. (e.g. the link problem mentioned somewhere above)
An completly other thing:
Got this screenshot when clicking on "reply" on this thread. I cann't reproduce it, but is does happen really often, say in one of twenty cases when clicking on "reply" somewhere. When using the "go back"-feature of my browser and clicking again on "reply" it does work again.
Is it intention that there is no "quote"-button in the RTE when creating a new discussion? Bug or feature?
There are some reasons why an "quote"-button is always useful. E.g. someone whats to quote from some document...
Edit: I noticed that you can always quote via that "insert"-Button.
Please take a look on this thread.
Can you explain why "6" in the second quote is a link to http://www.igniterealtime.org/community/ ? That was not my idea...just copy&pasted normal text. The link appeared first after clicking on "post".
Coolcat wrote:

Hrm. I don't know:
6. Until version 1.5 of this document (therefore also in RFC 3921), it was recommended to silently ignore message stanzas, which unfortunately resulted in a delivery "black hole" regarding message stanzas.
Testing to see if it does it for me.
As for your comment about the quote button, the quote -button- is for replies, quoting what you are replying to. If you are aiming to insert a simple quoted section, use the insert button (that looks like >>) .
Well that's really damned bizarre. =) thanks for reporting that! (the 6 thing)
Ok I know -why- it's doing it now, if you look at the html you'll see that that number is an anchor, and the html for that anchor was pasted in and turned into a real link for whatever reason. Reported back.
I think I'm seeing this, except it shows up as a system error for me. For me it only happens once per day, and is related to a jsessionid that gets set in the urls
Possible, since I'm posting less than 20 posts a day ![]()

For some reason the image in this thread is resized in a strange way. See attachment.
Some damaged layout in this thread:

Notice that there is no sidebar on the right (and no vertical scrollbar).
The "sidebar" has moved to the bottom of the page.

I tried to delete my own comment on a blog entry (OF 3.6.0 release), but this does not work. By pressing the "delete"-button, the entry is deleted, but if I reload the page, the comment is back again.
First off folk, Clearspace was updated over the weekend, a lot of things that were reported have been fixed. That said ...
An completly other thing:Got this screenshot when clicking on "reply" on this thread. I think I'm seeing this, except it shows up as a system error for me. For me it only happens once per day, and is related to a jsessionid that gets set in the urls. It appears to be something tomcat is "helping with". =/ It's definitely on the list of things being worked on right now.
I see that in recent activity comments on Blogs and Documents are shown on the list. Why not showing Polls comments? Also in this widget there could be an option to select which activities i want to see (created, replied, status updates, comments, blogs, docs, etc.)
Btw, it seems that only this thread acts weird when i press the link in email notification. "Spark features" thread's notification just took me right to the last comment, though it hasnt bolded the last page number.
Hm, as i have posted about comments in polls not showing up, they have started to show up in my recent activity ![]()
When i put Recent Activity widget in a narrow center column of my layout it show n-3 entries if i specify to show n.
