You have immediately found the weak spot of the community development. We are weak on Mac developers. There is a known issue for Mac, but neither cstux nor my dev team is able to fix it.

I am trying to install it on Vista SP1 but the installer wizard is giving me an error on the step to select the installation folder. Could not proceed any further! It works fine though on XP SP3.

I welcome the added settings for the taskbar flashing and group chats. However I still can't find a way to disable/suppress join and leave messages from group chats. Please let us know if there's a way.

Yeap, seems that IzPack installer cant create a folder in Program Files when UAC is enabled (same with Windows 7).

priviledged.jar worked well. Thanks. This version can also co-exist with 2.5.8 which is useful for me.

I would like to know if in this beta version there's a way to disable or suppress join/leave messages from the group chats.

We had the same requirement due to a Openfire extension we are running. I'll ask the programmer to create a patch for that and submit it to cstux.

wroot is not a all-knowing person i think cstux can comment on this better. So far i can only test with Windows 7 RC and i'm having problems launching Spark manually after a restart. Somehow javaw process is hanging and Spark is not showing up. Maybe i will try to install Vista later to test that.

So, start on system startup isnt working on Vista too, but at least there is no problems with launching Spark on Vista. With Windows 7 RC i'm only able to launch it after installing. After a restart the process is just hanging but GUI is not showing up.

But I dont get the diffence between the priviledged and non priviledged version.

And is there a list of installation parameters?

It seems that izpack offers an autoscript, but i dont get how set it as an parameter to the installer.

Priviledged version is for the systems with limited rights default user (no admin rights). You cant normally install simple version to Program files on Vista with non-admin user, as simple version won't provide UAC privilege elevating dialog. Similar problems could be on linux system using sudo command.

i tried the installer on a vista 32 bit sp1 and i have some troubles with the trayicon. It is a bit too large so it is cut on the edges and it is not showing the actual status (away and so on) After first install i had zwo trayicons. one normal with status icon's and the bigger one without any status-changes. I uninstalled all previous versions and deleted all sparkfolders. after that i installed clean with your installer an now i only have the big trayicon.

Oh, you mean this cutting on the left. This is a long time and known issue and it's the same on the XP. Image itself (spark.jar/images/spark-16x16.png) looks better, though it seems that it has a cut on the left too, but it looks worse in the systray. I see that in you case it is also cut at the top, though it looks ok here on XP. Anyway, we have discussed this with cstux last week. He said he'll try to do something with that, so i hope he will be able to fix this.

i installed 11071 over an existing 2.6 beta2 on windows 7 rc and i have the same cutting of the icon like on my vista...but now the icon is showing the status...im now away even as typing this message right now

update...looks like spark only registers mouse movements and only when its persistent over a few seconds, keyboard typing is ignored, i don't think that the old version had this behaviour or is it windows 7 related?

tisso, cutting icon wasnt addressed in this update and i dont know when it will be addressed. As about the away issue, i havent noticed, but as i see cstux has already confirmed this issue, so we'll be waiting for an another update.

Small patch for ~~SPARK-1057~~ has been attached to Jira. This has no preference to switch on or off. For our setup, we need alway an auto join due to an internal Openfire extension.

This installer works great on 64bit windows 7. The normal spark was giving errno=193, when i ran it. Thanks guys. The only proviso was I had to install it using the .jar version from an administrator command line as the .exe didn't work as it kept asking about association for the .jar's (which are currently unassociated). Perhaps the .exe can trigger java, rather than try and use the built in association which I'm sure many people will have pointed to other tools.

pbezztell, can you please reply? As it seems there is a bit of missunderstanding. Walter's patch is about suppressing the "User a wants you to join a group chat" dialog which is shown when you get an invite. I belive this is not what you have requested, so i have filed a new ticket for Walter's patch SPARK-1071.

Does you request is about hiding the "user a has joined the room", "user b has leaved the room" messages in a group chat window? Then ~~SPARK-1057~~ is a correct ticket, but i'm afraid that we dont have a patch for this anymore.

First of all I would like to thank you for reconsidering my one-and-only requirement in Spark. Just to clarify my request is to have an option to suppress "<user a> joined the room" and "<user b> left the room" messages (shown in green) in the group chats.

In our company we use Spark all the time and we have a large number of group chats active at any one time since we operate multi-nationally. Everyday I get complaints from users because they see loads and loads of these annoying messages on their group chats.

It would be great if there is an option in the preferences to enable or disble these messages from appearing in the group chats. Isn't it possible? Thanks.

Only with a commercial tool like InstallShield. I don't know about any MSI package generator that works well with our software distribution system (CA Unicenter) and we have tried a couple of open source installers.

Another problem with IzPack installer, particularly with uninstaller. On Windows 7 64-bit it doesnt remove Spark from the installed programs list and also it creates two entries: Spark and Spark 2.6.0.

Great to see that spark still undergoing changes and development. Im about to deploy spark out for my 70 users and was wondering what version i should deploy. I have downloaded and tested both the 11093.msi and the 11071.exe

Both seems to work fine for my purpose (getting people on my domain online through sso and be able to chat and see user information like phonenumber etc via ldap) Are there any other things i should consider before deploying? the 11093.msi is the newest right?

One more question. In the future when a new final version is released, will the update funktion in 11093 work, så i dont have to install new versions on 70 machines

The only issue i have about spark is the memory consumation, but ill live :-) Is there anyway i could slim down the memory consumation in spark, maybe delete some plugins etc but would it help at all

Keep up the good work, i would love to help if i could

Actually the current SVN version is 11138, but cstux hasnt had a time to build and upload newest version here. With the new version you can face one problem. Spark profile path has been changed to /User/Application Data/Spark instead of /User/Spark. So after the upgrade you can see that Spark is starting without your settings. You will have to move your profiles. Current installers are not doing this automatically so far and probably it will take some time to implement this.

If Jive will upload the newest version on this site, then Spark should notice the new version and propose an upgrade, as it is programmed to check for the new version on this site.

I dont think you can slim down memory consumption drastically, but you can try tweaking some startup options: http://www.igniterealtime.org/community/docs/DOC-1153

Hm maybe i havent noticed it before but it seems that the 11156 version is opening 2 processes of spark. one using about 2 mb and the other about 60mb. Is there a good reason for this that i missed. This is not a complaint im just curious :-)

Trying to make an unattended installer with 11186. I went through the installation, and told it at the end to generate the unattended installation .xml file. However, when I run "spark-installer.exe unattended.xml" it will show it unpacking the files, then the installer exits.

Unattended installation of 11186 using "java -jar spark-installer.jar unattended.xml" method works great!

I'm very intersted in helping test this new version on both Mac and PC. I don't see a Mac installer above, however, and the Java install completed but an exception is thrown when trying to launch it.

Hello. Using the head (revision #11370 as of Friday November 6, 2009) out of the SVN, I created a .MSI file after some tinkering. Should I post the .MSI? Below are the questions / comments from my experience.

(M1) The icon that is placed on the Desktop is named "Spark.exe". I believe that this should be simply "Spark". This error occurs in the .aip file at (left nav) Project Definition > Files and Folders; (right pane) Desktop. Right-click on the name, select properties, and edit the name to "Spark". (http://www.igniterealtime.org/community/thread/40280)

(M2) Please place all files in SVN needed for .MSI build. For example, to create the .MSI installer, the JRE 6_0_14 files are not included, even though they are referenced in the /spark/build/installer/spark.aip file. Perhaps the JRE files could be placed under a new folder: "spark\build\win\jre". Oh, and then please update the "spark.aip.tmpl" to reflect the new location of the JRE files. (M3) Could a README file be added that indicates that, in order to build an MSI, a 3rd party tool named Advanced Installer, available from http://www.advancedinstaller.com/ , is needed? Note, I believe that another 3rd party tool is needed to create the .EXE file.

Hi cstux,

I've run the .jar package above on an OpenSolaris snv_127 system (x64), and while Spark launches it is practically unsuable. Lemme know if I should open specific bug reports for this, otherwise if you or someone can suggest an easy way of getting Java error outputs and screen grabs to you happy to provide these.

In short:

- preferences window refuses to open

- messages sent to Contacts (recipients using Spark 2.5.8) are apparently sent in some form, but my beta client refuses to remove the message typed and sent from the text entry window, nor updates the conversation with the entered text

- replies from Contacts are blank (i.e. no idea what they are saying)

dickinson, 2 months is nothing comparing to 2 years since the last stable official release As i said, i doubt this will be fixed. There is only one man working on Spark (voluntarilly), but this issue is also related to Fastpath and Fastpath is not maintained at all. This is just too complicated. If you really depend on this so much, then search for another product maybe.

I happen to have installed version 6.0 beta spark to the spark plug and sip phone behaves strange. For example the windows are "taken" and if you the above image is minimized. I appreciate your help.

wroot, i'm not going to search for another one 'cause spark is really great! I hope it's is gonna be solve (not soon I know now, jajajaj)

wroot...i'm using this tool as IT support, i'm thinking of create a message for clients (customers) when something is wrong (i.e. an HR app isnt working) before they start a chat. May I modify the registration form every time? Or try to create a pop up when they launch the Explorer?

dickinson, actually it seems that cstux has fixed this in the latest SVN commit (11420). At least he tried, as now Fastpath is not working in Spark at all I think this will be fixed soon, maybe in 11421.

My mistake i'll give you the whole story this time. Has anyone attempted compiling the latest trunk src and running it on windows 7? When you open a message window it doesn't open at all. I tested on two machines, same problem although same installer worked fine on windows xp. I downloaded the latest compiled spark.exe from the site and it works fine on windows 7 which got me to thinking maybe the trunk src code is somehow the problem so I went under tags and compiled 2_5_8 and it works fine with 7. Issue must be with the latest trunk src; was someone already aware of this issue? I'm new on the forum so don't really know what to do with this information or if it is even relevant...

synchronous - you are right about compiled version issue on win7. As installer version is running fine, then probably some part of the compiled version cant run on win7 (UAC issue maybe?). Not sure whether i should file this as a bug or not.

I have not spent much time with Advanced Installer, as I am awaiting direction on whether or not this tool will still be used, based on cstux's comment elsewhere that all commercial tools will be removed. Currently, the non-Free Edition of Advanced Installer is required to build the MSI, due to the features used in the configuration file available in Subversion. (I believe that the main feature is the creation of the spark.exe file, but I believe that Launch4J can be used to create the Spark.exe instead). I believe (75% guess) that the Free Edition can be used to create the MSI. My trial expires on December 13, 2009. I am assuming that the message/dialog that you mention will no longer show on MSIs built after that, but the problem is that I will not be able to use the existing Advanced Installer configuration file at that time. (I have asked the company behind Advanced Installer if the Free Edition of their tool can be used to build an MSI based on a configuration file created by a paid edition; see here. The answer is no; the Free Edition cannot build MSIs based on features in the commercial editions.)

Please note that the current MSI installer, and perhaps other Windows installation programs, does not delete the Windows registry entry to launch at startup, i.e. the entry for Spark under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run is not removed.

I believe that I have created the ANT tasks and associated configuration files required to build the MSI files using the Free Edition from AdvancedInstaller (http://www.advancedinstaller.com/) to install Spark, both with and without an embedded JRE. How do I get someone to check it? Oh, the MSI installer does not have a Dialog Box popup mentioning a Trail Version.

To build the version with the JRE 1.6.0.14 bundled, all the files from “jre-6u14-windows-i586.exe” need to be available. Installed, this is about 88 MB in size which is probably a bit too much to place in Subversion. Alternatively, the JRE 1.6.0.14 installer can be included or linked to (http://java.sun.com/products/archive/j2se/6u14/index.html), with specific instructions of where to install the JRE, so that the paths match up.

If a version of the JRE other than 1.6.0.14 needs to be bundled, the configuration files used by AdvancedInstaller, i.e. the *.aip files, need to be changed. This is because the configuration files have the name of all of the files to be installed, including the version specific file “/jre/bin/npjpi160_14.dll” file.

To somewhat organize the build files specific to Windows, as well as to the build tool, the following directory structure was created under “build”:

So far i have tested this MSI on XP and Win7 32bit. It installs and Spark launches. Except that Spark has a bug on Win7 (not related to MSI) and chat windows cant be opened That is i have tested the manual install with admin rights.

All other programs are working fine, spark/java reinstall didn't help. Any solution for that?

I just tried to install the spark ".deb" in Ubuntu 9.10 and its asking for libstdc++5 however that dependency is phased out and uses libstdc++6. I don't know how to do this but I just wanted to let the team know about this. Thanks again, I'm a Jive-Freak

libstdc++5 is needed by jdic. Actually jdic is only needed for the webbrowser (Fastpath).

i have compiled the latest svn with netbeans and i think since the last update of smack i can not login at the first attempt. the second login works. on the clientside the log tells me he gets no response from server. the server tells me Error Caused by: java.lang.Exception: Disallowed character... anybody similar problems?

Hello I'm new to the community. I am having a issue with my Spark Build using Eclips and compiling in Ant. I have followed the directions is this post http://www.igniterealtime.org/community/docs/DOC-1040. I run my build using 11668 from the main Spark Trunk. I am using Java JDK 1.6.0_14 I am able to have a successful build, launch Spark, login, and Instant message. The issue I am having is that the "Logout" is not working. When I click on Logout , I am not logged out and spark remains opened. Logout with reason works just fine. Is there something I need to change in my build or need to include to get the "logout" to work . Thank you in advance. jim c

thank you Will (CStux) for fixing the issue with the logout button in spark. To the community, is there a problem with the Add to Dic button when spell checking?? The java Error is java.lang.UnsupportedOperationException when trying to add a a work to the dictionary within Spark. I used the 11671 trunk in my build. Sorry for the typo . The java.lang.UnsupportedOperationException occurs when a "WORD" is added to the diectionary through the "Add to Dic" button. And the word is not added to the dictionary.

Understood. It's been a couple years since I've worked with Openfire and I'm trying to get a feel for which version people are actively using, and if these Beta versions are stable enough for "actual use". So far in testing everything has worked well.

If it works, then you are ok. But. I think in this older msi there is still old theme in use. Now it's beeing replaced with new one (Substance). So, if in the future you upgrade to the latest version, it might look a bit different.

cstux, you wrote earlier in this discussion that it's possible to use unattended installs with izPack by providing a unattended.xml file. Where can I find the documentation (or syntax) for this file? Are there any examples?

Edit: Just saw that you can generate one at the end of a manual install. I'm still interested in finding out if there are any additional options or syntax that I can use (like supress notifications etc)

i'm compiling the latest version using netbeans and have modified a few things like the autoupdate check after one minute because somehow my server tells the clients that there is a new version whatever setting i change on the server side. i deleted all parts checking for an update and now it's silent. I have another problem with the latest client when logging on. The roaster shows offline contacts when logging on even if i disable them in the menu. I have a AD LDAP integration with groups and i think something changed in the last versions showing those groups when logging on.

Have you set the path for Launch4J in the build.properties file?

I also ran into an issue with Python and added this to build.properties

This could be an issue with Red5. Anyway, we can't develop Spark keeping in mind all the third party plugins. Red5 author should look into this, but i know he is already busy with new Red5 server version Redfire and with SparkWeb project.

filetransfer works with latest build but it is not compatible with older versions! i have another issue when logging on. I get the users from ldap-groups and with the latest builds offline users are always shown, even if the checkmark is unset in the contacts menu (not combined with grouping offline users). under rare conditions it works but most times when logging on the checkbox does not what it is supposed to do. Another issue is the roster when reconnecting spark. Often the roster is totally messed up and almost all contacts are shown offline. You can provoke this by logging on with two clients and reconnecting both with one user. Most reconnects end in a scrambled roster.

Well, we can't make it compatible with older versions. There were a lot changes between them, so it is enough that transfers will be working between 2.6.0 clients.

The bug 1169 (empty rosters after reconnect) is a long standing issue in Spark. Several attempts were made to fix this one. The problem for developers is the fact that no clear reproduction for the "scrambled" rosters has been found.

Any reproduction for the empty roster issue is highly welcome.

Well. I can reproduce this i think constantly with the latest build when i kick Spark user while logging in with the same user. If i reconnect after that, then all roster is offline in Spark, though there is always one test user online on my server.

it would be great, if you can sort this out. i send my machine every evening into standby and i even created an standby-event driven task to restart spark so my roster is not "scrambled" every morning

wow, cstux already fixed the roster reconnetion bug 1169. Works for me now. The only thing that's still a bit tricky is when the client looses the connection and the server still thinks the user is online. All messages sent to the point where the server realizes the user is really offline are lost. This also happens when the client crashes or when i go to standby without logging out first. This is a major server issue in my oppinnion. Has something changed in this behaviour with 3.7 or is this an open issue somewhere?

Another idea is that filetransfers are shown in the history like the broadcasts in the latest releases or is it to complicated to store that information in the transcripts...?

Hmm, File transfer is not compatible to older Spark versions anymore? I assumed file transfer should work also across different clients and platforms and now I have to learn that it does not even work between various Spak versions?!

So, is the current SVN version getting us any closer to this whichful thinking of interoparability?

Well, i'm not writing the code, so it was just my point of view how i understand it. File transfers should work between different clients and OSes etc. Ideally. But this thing is very complex, taking in mind firewalls, NATs and other things standing in its way. Spark's file transfers were always an issue with other clients as far as i have tested it long time ago, and sometimes it was an issue with transfers between Spark. So, what i'm saying is probably transfers were buggy in older versions, so maybe it will be incompatible with current version becuase of those bugs. I hope that new improvements to file transfers code will make it compatible with clients which are using xmpp standards. Maybe it will work with older versions of Spark. Would be great, if only this won't involve hacks to the code. I guess only cstux can clarify this issue.

Noticed a annoyance when double-clicking on the tray icon for Spark if the primary contact list is not hidden but in the background it is minimized, could this action be changed to bring the window to the front.

Larger annoyance, when joining a conference room already in session all messages are reported as "new" if though I would be in the conference room on the previous day. This further hangs Spark when the Toast functionality is used and loops through all the messages before catching up.

it looks like it began when my roster began to empty because everybody was going home plus maybe i locked my workstation at 17:31 and the entries began at 17:37 and came in an interval of 1 minute to 2 hours ending this morning in an interval of almost every second. i assume it got more active when the roster filled with online contacts. The messages send to me over night never pop up.

i'll try to reproduce... i hope you get something out of the message.

another thing came up today, i have one user in the roster that i can not activate. it's the last contact in the roster (organized in groups), i can see him but i can not activate him.

i have the suspicion that when i lock my workstation and in the meantime contacts go offline the roster is not rendered correctly.

I have installed both

It works great , but the translator plugin not working , I see the drop down menu in the chat window , but doesn't do any translation , I also can't see the the translator JRE file under the plugin folder

can you please help me to get it to work

Maybe Translator plugin was a proprietary plugin and was removed because of that? Here, i have created a ticket for the time being SPARK-1181. Maybe someone will look into it.

Not in the email. Go to this document "Latest Spark version from SVN" and see attachments on that page. There is a translator.zip. You don't have to open JAR file, but edit the source, which is in .java files, and then compile your own jar file. Anyway, you can open and extract jar file's content with an archiver (e.g. 7-zip).

Hi. I have installed RC1 on Windows 7 machine after uninstalling 2.5.8. I have copied the profile files into the new folder as instructed. However I have a problem with the chat history. I lost the chat history with my contacts. Is there a way I can see the chat history please?

are you sure you copied to the right folder? Profile should be in

c:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Spark\

the chat history can be found in

c:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Spark\user\%sparkuser%@%server%\transcripts\
